I didn’t get a chance to have lunch today until 4:15pm. That’s the kind of crazy busy day I had at work. Running around from meeting to meeting all day long. Yikes! Not a good way to ease into the weekend.
I definitely needed a little stress reliever when I got home. Good thing we had speed work on our schedule!
Since it was already dark, we headed over to the high school hoping that they’d have their lights on. We were in luck!
We’d be getting some FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS action! A beautiful astroturf field surrounded by a regulation track. Nice!
SPEED WORKOUT
Warm-up: 1 mile
Speed Workout: On the Field – Pyramid Sprints. 10 yds up to 100 yds, back down to 10.

We started at the goal line, and did a pyramid of sprints: First sprint = 10 yds, Second = 20 yds, etc. Increasing up to 100 yds, then repeat going back down to 10 yds. Each sprint was paired with a recovery jog back to the starting point.
Cool-down: 1 mile
Total Distance: Approximately 3.25 miles
This required some math on my part to figure out the distance traversed on the field.
10+20+30+40+50+60+70+80+90+100+90+80+70+60+50+40+30+20+10 = 1000 yards at pace.
Recovery was the same. (Well actually a bit more since you run 5-10 yards through the finish point)
There are 1760 yards in a mile, so the speed portion of our workout totaled approximately 1.25 miles.
See, I just worked my body AND my brain!
REACTIONS
I have to say, this was a lot of fun! It was a nice change of pace to run on springy turf and under the lights. I have to say, 100 yards seems a lot farther on television. Those 80 yard kick returns suddenly seem a little less impressive. Although, I didn’t have a slew of very strong, very fast men trying to tackle me. I’m sure I would have run MUCH faster.
It was a little chilly, so I didn’t have time to perfect my end zone celebration. I’ll save that for next time.

This sounds like a fabulous workout! I used to do speed work on the football field, sprinting from one corner to the opposite, recovering on the end line, and starting over with the next corner. I love the idea of using the yard lines.
This is the kind of work out that in high school I would have loathed, but I might get a kick out of it now. I’ll have to keep it in mind to try out- thanks for the recommendation.
Side note- I miss Friday Night Lights so much! Best show of all time!
How fun! I love running at night under the lights! In college some of my best track races were night races under the lights! So so fun!!!
